Rev. Dr. Anthony McPhail

Valdosta First Methodist Church

What are your experiences and areas of service that you believe will be valuable in your role as a General Conference delegate?

The Lord has blown me away with amazing opportunities to serve the GMC! In South Georgia, my roles of leading the Certified Lay Ministry program, contributing to annual conference planning, and serving as Presiding Elder in Valdosta have connected me with remarkable lay people and pastors. These roles have given me a clear view of our congregations' blessings and challenges, as well as the deeply held values of South Georgia Global Methodists.

At the general church level, I played a key role in planning the Convening General Conference and will do so again for GC 2026. In Costa Rica, I led onsite registration and managed the hybrid delegate Zoom connections, ensuring participation for those in visa-challenged areas. For GC 2026, I'm honored to serve as the Vice Chair for the General Conference Commission, overseeing worship and logistics. These experiences have fostered numerous global relationships that I believe will strengthen our delegation's ability to engage in faithful decisions for our movement's future.

Describe why you believe that God has potentially called you to serve as a General Conference delegate.

I am humbled by any chance to serve the wider church. By offering my name as a delegate, I am making myself available, trusting the conference's discernment and knowing South Georgia has many capable pastors who would serve well. My call to the GMC included a desire to help shape our denomination during these formative years. It has already been an honor to serve in forming the South Georgia Annual Conference, as part of the GC 2024 delegation, and on the GC Commission. If my experience and expertise would benefit our next delegation, I would be honored to serve.

The 2026 General Conference is crucial for finalizing our constitution, refining our doctrine, and electing bishops and connectional leaders for the next six years. As our global church grows, it is important to make decisions that sustain and strengthen local churches while maintaining a lean structure. My connectional experiences in finance, worship, conference planning, appointments, lay ministry, and clergy education would offer valuable perspective and support this effort. With 30 years of ministry ahead, I want to help build a lasting foundation for current and future generations.

Beyond all this, I am simply excited to be part of this historic occasion! Hosting the conference in Africa powerfully reflects our global nature, and focusing on the beauty of holiness aligns us with our Global Methodist mission. Representing South Georgia as a delegate would be an honor, and I thank you all for your prayerful consideration.
